I am recently married and my husband and I are looking to invest in bedroom furniture that will last 50 years in durability as well as style. I love the new collection by Thomasville called Urban Retreat. if I have to spend the extra I will, but do I have to? Broyhill makes a design called Attic Heirloom. I like it but I'm not sure if the 'worm hole' look is exactly right. Also, from what I have been told, Broyhill was the first to come up with this look before everyone copied it – Is this actually correct? Also, how do the furniture vendors rank? For example, I like Thomasville and my husband liked the Broyhill – and a friend said why settle for a Toyota when I can have a Porsche. Is this a fair statement? I like this America/French Country look and it seems to be something that will be timeless for years to come. can someone please help? thank you in advance.
Pottery Barn
Restoration Hardware
William Sonoma Home
I don't know if they are the "top 5" but they all have high quality furniture, it is also pricey.

I can't answer your question, but you look like my twin!!
Ditto to Henredon and Bernhard. Your can also try Drexel-Heritage. Craftique also makes high end classic designs.
You are exactly right to take your time and look on furniture as an investment. Consumers will readilllypay $25.000 for a car that is worth little in 10 years, but will not pay that much for qualityfurniture that does not decrease in value. These days you have to be careful because so much furniture is made in the far east-i.e. pottery barn. Also some furniture collections can be discontinued or the wood slightly changed if you plan to complete purchase later and match is difficult.
Best way to get ideas of timeless designs is to check out some decorating books.
Also, don't be fooled by pricing. The msrp- manufacturer's suggested retail price is about 280% of dealer's cost. So when they say it is 50% off, they still make a profit. I have worked several years as a sales rep for a line of California contemporary furniture. beautifully made, just not my personal style, still a pleasure to sell.
You might consider consulting with a decorator not affiliated with a store. I have used one who charged by the hour $75 and her help was invaluable. Even with placement of furniture and hanging pictures correctly it was money well spent using what I had, and she was not trying to sell me anything, but naturally would be happy to order anything. I like to see things in person and touch the finish and check construction.
These are rambling thoughts . Have fun. Buy from a reputable dealer and made in the USA if possible.
What are the top 5 furniture vendors besides Thomasville? And how do they rank?
